All hazardous material shipments must comply with the Unites States Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). All hazmat employers and hazmat employees involved in the identification, replacement, and use of hazardous materials placards for the transportation of hazardous materials must be able to identify and select the appropriate placards for specific classes of hazardous materials and any exceptions to these requirements.
This course will explain the placarding requirements and their applicability to transportation of hazardous materials for different modes of transportation – highway, rail, vessel, and air. This DOT Hazmat Function Specific Training: Placarding course will also make clear the placarding requirements for hazardous materials in bulk packaging and exceptions to these requirements, as well as the types of subsidiary hazards that must always be identified through placarding. The learner will be able to recognize the different hazardous materials warning placards as described by the Hazardous Materials Regulation (HMR) upon course completion.
The DOT Hazmat transportation training requirements are outlined in Subpart H of Part 172 of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
All employers and employees who prepare hazardous materials for transportation or engage in the actual transportation of hazardous materials in commerce must receive adequate training to understand and interpret the requirements set forth in the Hazardous Materials Table (HMT). This course will enable workers to gain an in-depth understanding of the various general and specific placarding requirements for the transportation of hazardous materials as recommended by the Hazardous Materials Table (HMT).

- Individuals who indicate by placarding that a hazardous material being transported in commerce is present in a vehicle, freight container, rail car, or aircraft unit load device;
- Workers handling hazmat packages at any point in the transportation value and need to interpret and understand placards;
- Persons responsible for the safety of hazardous materials during transportation;
- Emergency response personnel to enable them to quickly identify hazardous materials in the event of an unplanned release or spill of hazmat; and
- Compliance officers who certify that all applicable requirements of the HMR are being met.

Yes. Employees whose job function directly affects the safe transportation of hazardous materials must receive training within 90 days after employment or a change in job function.
Hazmat employees must receive recurrent training at least once every three years. For employees involved in the transportation of hazardous materials by air, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires recurrent training once every two years.
In addition, according to 49 CFR 172.702(b), the DOT Hazmat Function Specific Training: Placarding Training certification must also be updated whenever the DOT issues a new regulation or revises any existing regulations. No employee can perform any activities under the new or revised DOT regulations unless he/she has undergone training which incorporate the new and/or revised rules and regulations.
