Competence is developed over time by implementing the knowledge acquired through a training course to on-the-job work processes. Therefore, in addition to this online course it is important that you receive additional on-site training from your employer.

Answer:

All hazardous material shipments must comply with the Unites States Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). All hazmat employers and hazmat employees involved in the identification, replacement, and use of hazardous materials placards for the transportation of hazardous materials must be able to identify and select the appropriate placards for specific classes of hazardous materials and any exceptions to these requirements.

This course will explain the placarding requirements and their applicability to transportation of hazardous materials for different modes of transportation – highway, rail, vessel, and air. This DOT Hazmat Function Specific Training: Placarding course will also make clear the placarding requirements for hazardous materials in bulk packaging and exceptions to these requirements, as well as the types of subsidiary hazards that must always be identified through placarding. The learner will be able to recognize the different hazardous materials warning placards as described by the Hazardous Materials Regulation (HMR) upon course completion.

The DOT Hazmat transportation training requirements are outlined in Subpart H of Part 172 of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
