Lesson 1: Pandemic – An Overview
As a pandemic is a significant event that can result in widespread public health, economic, and social consequences, this lesson provides an overview of what constitutes a pandemic. The lesson defines a pathogen and its modes of transmission, explains the terms “epidemic” and “pandemic”, describes Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) and their significance in workplaces, and summarizes the impacts of a pandemic on businesses and industries.
Lesson 2: Business Continuity Plans
To manage in a pandemic environment or in situations such as a natural or man-made disaster, organizations should have comprehensive and flexible business continuity plans in place to respond effectively to such emergencies and minimize the adverse impacts. This lesson will define a business continuity plan, explain the difference between a regular business continuity plan and an infectious disease preparedness and response plan, identify areas/elements of a business that require careful consideration while planning for an infectious disease outbreak, and discuss the strategies and actions undertaken in each of the three phases of an infectious disease preparedness and response plan.
Lesson 3: Protecting Employees During a Pandemic
Employers play a critical role in protecting employee health and safety during a pandemic. This lesson will focus on the various intervention strategies and infection control measures available to employers for safeguarding the well-being of their employees. The lesson will contrast the effectiveness of various infection control measures based on the Hierarchy of Controls, differentiate between a surgical mask and respirator, describe OSHA’s occupational risk pyramid and the hazard controls and intervention strategies used for each exposure group, and discuss the limitations and restrictions that may apply to international business travelers during a pandemic.
Lesson 4: COVID-19 and the Emerging Trends
The extended impact of a pandemic outbreak on the social and economic fabric of societies can have catastrophic consequences, ranging from tragic levels of mortality to destabilization of the global economy, trade, and national security. This lesson will describe the symptoms and modes of transmission of COVID-19, differentiate between seasonal influenza and pandemic influenza, outline OSHA standards and recordkeeping requirements applicable to COVID-19, summarize the guidelines individuals and employers must follow in each of the three phases of resuming work operations, and discuss the emerging work trends for businesses and individuals post COVID-19.
